HubClub: Migration HubClub #2. Migrants in the Austrian Press

Everyone knows the saying: “Bad news travel fast”. Journalism plays a great role in shaping our minds on how we view the world. The power of the written word goes beyond borders.

So, what role do journalists and newspapers play in the identity discourse today? Can we talk about migrants in a positive context? What is the borderline between discrimination and freedom of speech?

Join us on a talk with Mr. Alexander Warzilek, managing director of the Austrian Press Council, an independent organization that plays the ethical conscience role on journalism and also makes sure that freedom of speech is at the same time not constricted.

The Austrian Press Council examines press articles and looks into cases of possible discrimination against minorities. At the same time they are the authors of the Code of Ethics,  which many newspapers have signed up to as a pledge  towards an ethical and qualitative reporting.

Join us for an interesting discussion followed by a Q&A session and networking afterwards. The goal of the talk is to gain more understanding on what freedom of the press means, why Heute, Krone & Co choose not to be members of the Press Council and maybe find out what we can do to create a more positive discourse around migrants.

What is the Migration Hub Club?

The Migration Hub Club is a quarterly event meant to bring together like-minded people that are passionate about finding solutions to the migration and integration sector while networking, sharing and creating synergies.

The purpose of the club is to foster an inclusive society, to encourage a positive dialogue, to bring practitioners and enablers from the migration field together in order to make use of resources, knowledge, experiences and contacts to create solutions, and a positive impact for the migrant experience in Austria.

The quarterly meetings revolve around different topics while inviting experts and encouraging constructive dialogue to create synergies and why not find solutions towards a more inclusive society. Members can at any time recommend topics and speakers for next sessions. If you want to join the club, join our FB Group.

The event is hosted by Andra Slaats, Co-founder of Younited Cultures.
