Yesterday, we had our first movie screening in the Hub. Equipped with fresh-made pop-corn we watched “El-Sistema” on our light-wall/movie screen. Afterwards, we had a talk with Werner Binnenstein-Bachstein (Managing Director, Caritas – and Initiator of Tanz die Toleranz) who shared his experiences when being in Venezuela, working with José Abreu and his initiative “Vorlaut” to bring El Sistema to Austria.

Many people have heard of ,El Sistema‘, an initiative in Venezuela, founded by José Antonio Abreu, that aims to get children off the street by educating them in classical music and grouping them together to an orchestra. What was also new to us was the sheer size this initiative has grown to. Currently, more than 300.000 children are being educated, many of which are able to escape the poverty cicle by becoming professional musicians or finding other sustainable jobs due to improved grades in their regular education.

See a trailer for “El Sistema“.

Looking forward to many more movie screenings and talks. Definitely more to come soon :)
