As cities attract more and more people around the globe and become more interconnected, the importance of democracy and creativity in urban planning rises in relevance. We see a trend of highly bureaucratic and technocratic governance processes which dominate most cities in the Global North, with results such as gentrification becoming widespread. Against this backdrop, the reclamation of underused urban spaces by grassroots, democratic organizations stands out. They provide an opportunity to sustainably regenerate buildings/regions, providing safe spaces for marginalized communities, fostering creativity and facilitating the self-organization of civil society to co-create their urban environment. We will explore what opportunities and barriers organizations encounter when trying to find a space, create a community, find funding, stay independent, etc.
At the end of the presentations and panel discussion there will be an open round of Q&A so you can ask all your questions and share your experience.
Ulrich Fries (Kreative Räume Wien) and Frederik Marroquin (Semmelweisklinik) are already confirmed as part of our speakers, with more to be announced.
