If the correct investment strategies are implemented companies can significantly support innovation toward net zero by adopting strategic approaches like those of Smartworks Innovation, the startup investment arm of Wiener Stadtwerke and Wien Energie. To understand more about how they work and the startups they invest in, we spoke with Yves Pircher, Investment Manager at Smartworks Innovation.
The investment strategies from Smartworks Innovation
Large companies often face challenges in staying ahead of innovation, which typically requires substantial internal investment. However, one effective strategy is to collaborate with startups that can address specific problems or needs. One major goal for Wiener Stadtwerke and Wien Energie is achieving net zero by 2040. “Our (at Smartworks Innovation) investments align with the Net Zero 2040 strategy of Wiener Stadtwerke and Wien Energie. Every investment we make supports this goal, whether directly or indirectly, contributing to sustainability and decarbonization efforts,” explains Yves Pircher.
Smartworks innovation’s unique position
Smartworks Innovation is co-owned equally by Wien Energie and Wiener Stadtwerke. This unique position allows Smartworks to invest in startups with collaboration potential with either parent company. “For instance, if Wiener Linien is looking for autonomous buses, we might be asked for our insights since we have a good market overview from our activities at fairs, juries, competitions, and direct contacts. We also scout and contact startups directly or accept applications through our website or LinkedIn. We’re very open to being contacted,” says Pircher.
Despite being in operation for only two years, Smartworks has already invested in five promising startups:
Future Prospects and Readiness for Investment
Smartworks is continually on the lookout for new startups and investments. They are open to being contacted by potential collaborators and startups seeking funding. However, it’s crucial for these startups to be prepared for the investment process, which often involves demonstrating their collaboration potential and readiness for market integration. There are many ways to integrate this into the DNA of a startup, one way is to integrate it by programs like Marc, from Erste Social Bank, which boosts investment readiness for startups in different industries and stages.
Conclusion
As the business landscape evolves, strategic investments in innovation and sustainability become increasingly vital. Smartworks exemplifies how investment companies can drive sustainable development by connecting startups and established companies and organizations.
